I found this definition in an article on the Internet and thought it might help some of you to understand what it's all about. Also, here's a link to an article that explains why coil binding is so important to race teams. (Note this was published June 3, 2006.)
"Coil binding is when the chassis setup uses the tire as a shock absorber. The right front spring and shock are set just stiff enough to hold the car in a legal position during inspection. Once on the track, under the forces of aerodynamics, the tire becomes the shoulders of the world, supporting in excess of 4400 pounds of mechanical force being generated from a 3400 pound race car."
